Kambo (also known as “sapo,” or “toad vaccine”) is a substance harvested from the poisonous secretions of the Amazon tree frog, Phyllomedusa bicolor. For hundreds of years this traditional frog medicine is being used by various Amazonian tribes for hunting prowess, curing ailments of the mind, body, and spirit and to remove negative energy – the so called “Panema”. Kambo is said to provide numerous benefits such as gaining strength and maintaining health – both physically and mentally.

Two time Nobel Prize nominee Vittorio Erspamer (he discovered the neurotransmitter Serotonin) was the first person to analyse Kambo in a lab and describe it a “fantastic chemical cocktail with potential medical applications, unequalled by any other amphibian”.

Since Erspamer’s research this purgative, immunity-boosting medicine has gained renown outside of the Amazon as a powerful treatment for chronic pain, mental illness and addiction.

Kambo is a powerful medicine and should only be administered under the guidance of experienced practitioners. Our practitioners at Om-Mij and Be Free will guide you and help you gain the best benefits from your Kambo ceremony. We will ensure proper set and setting and help you to set an intention before the ceremony and integrate the experience afterward.

At our Kambo ceremonies a small incense stick is used to burn small points onto the very top layer of the skin. This blistered skin is carefully removed and the Kambo medicine is then applied to the small burn sites. Once the medicine is applied, you will feel the effects within seconds. While the sensations are generally intense and not so comfortable, they are normally passing within 20 – 60 minutes.

Most often participants feel an increase in heart rate, as well as growing pressure in the head and body. As the medicine continues to circulate, participants may experience swelling in the face and hands, dizziness, a general bodily discomfort and purging.

For everyone the experience is different and sometimes participants report beautiful treatments like dropping into states of calmness alongside euphoria and bliss. Ultimately, participants report experiencing numerous beneficial effects, such as increased strength, heightened senses and increased ability to face stressful situations.

Before your Kambo ceremony you should drink 1,5 liters of water. This will help you with the purification and keep you hydrated. The Kambo ceremony begins by burning several small holes into the skin (generally on the arms for men and legs for women). Dried Kambo is then reconstituted with water and applied to the fresh wounds. Kambo initially causes a generally unpleasant period of increased heart rate, nausea and vomiting that lasts 30 to 60 minutes. Kambo’s cleansing effects begin within minutes of administration. Throughout the whole ceremony you will be guided, supported and taken care of by our experienced loving practitioners.

Many people use Kambo to prepare their bodies and minds for an Ayahuasca ceremony. After an Kambo ceremony they feel increased strength, calmness and heightened senses. Participants say that Kambo completely cleanses the body so that they are able to enjoy Ayahuasca without purging.

What Kambo cannot do is remove the root of our emotional and spiritual blockages. Ayahuasca is used to eliminate the causes of anger and fear.

If you combine both ceremonies, you get a very effective and healing therapy for body, mind and soul.

If you want to participate in both ceremonies, then it is ideal to perform the Kambo ceremony 2 hours before the Ayahuasca ceremony. This will make your body receptive to ayahuasca and enable an open encounter with ayahuasca.

Of course Kambo can also be used without taking ayahuasca.
