What is Kambo?

Kambo (also known as ‘sapo’ or ‘toad vaccine’) is a substance harvested from the toxic secretions of an Amazonian frog, the Phyllomedusa bicolor. Tribes in the Amazon have used this traditional frog medicine for hundreds of years for hunting, curing mental and physical complaints and removing negative energy – called ‘Panema’. Kambo offers many benefits, including gaining strength and maintaining physical and mental health.

Vittorio Erspamer (the discoverer of the neurotransmitter serotonin and twice nominated for the Nobel Prize) was the first person to analyse Kambo in a laboratory. He described it as “a fantastic chemical cocktail with potential medical applications, unmatched by other amphibians”. Since Erspamer’s research, this medicine – which is purifying and stimulates the immune system – also became known outside the Amazon as a powerful treatment for chronic pain, mental illness and addiction.

Kambo is a strong medicine and should only be administered under the guidance of experienced practitioners. At OMMIJ, we guide and help you get the most benefits from your Kambo ceremony. We provide the right setting and help you set an intention for the ceremony and integrate the experience afterwards.

How does Kambo work?

In our Kambo ceremonies, we use a small incense stick to burn small dots in the top layer of skin. We carefully remove this seared skin. We then apply the Kambo medicine to the small burns. Once the medicine is applied, you feel the effects within seconds. This can be intense and sometimes uncomfortable, but it is normally over after about 20 to 60 minutes.

Usually, participants feel an increase in heart rate and increasing pressure in the head and body. As the medicine migrates through the body, participants may experience various things, such as swelling in the face and hands, dizziness, general physical discomfort and purging.

The experience is different for everyone. Sometimes participants report beautiful feelings such as calmness, euphoria and bliss. Eventually, participants report noticing many beneficial effects after the ceremony, such as increased strength, heightened sensory perceptions and a greater ability to face stressful situations.

Kambo in combination
with Ayahuasca

Many people use Kambo to prepare their body and mind for an Ayahuasca ceremony. After a Kambo ceremony, they feel more strength and calmness and experience heightened sensory perceptions. Participants say Kambo cleanses the body completely, so they can enjoy Ayahuasca without purging.

What Kambo cannot do is remove the root of our emotional and spiritual blockages. For this, we use Ayahuasca. If you combine both ceremonies you get a very effective and healing therapy for body, mind and spirit. If you want to participate in both ceremonies, it is ideal to perform the Kambo ceremony two hours before the Ayahuasca ceremony. This makes your body receptive and allows for an open encounter with Ayahuasca.

Note: Kambo ceremonies will be held only in Spain during our 3- and 5-day Ayahuasca retreats.

Kambo ceremony

Kambo is one of the strongest natural resources to boost our immune system.

Before the Kambo ceremony, you should drink 1.5 litres of water. This helps you purify and keeps you hydrated. The Kambo ceremony starts with burning some small holes in the skin (usually on the arms in men and on the legs in women). We then prepare dried Kambo with water. We apply this to the fresh wounds. At first, Kambo is usually unpleasant because of increased heart rate, nausea and vomiting. This lasts for 30 to 60 minutes. The cleansing effect of Kambo starts within minutes of its application. Throughout the ceremony, you will be guided, supported and cared for by our experienced and loving facilitators.

In the days after the Kambo ceremony, participants often report that they have a clear mind, have cleared their emotional baggage, are less ill and have an increased sense of energy and well-being. Many people participate in a Kambo ceremony to remove negative energy from their lives and come out with a more positive energy and vision.
